- 1607, "tearful," from M.E. Maudelen, from Magdalene (O.Fr. Madelaine), woman's name, especially Mary, the repentant sinner forgiven by Jesus in Luke vii.37, from L. (Maria) Magdalena, from Gk. (Maria he) Magdalene "(Mary) of Magdala," a town on the Sea of Galilee. In paintings, she was often shown weeping as a sign of repentance.
